One our core outdoor athletes and dedicated customers just returned from tackling Cotopaxi a 19347 ft peak in Ecuador. Andrew Felegra 52 is a newer climber spending most of his time training in places like the White Mountains, the Gunks and Rumney he has a big drive to climb Ice, rock, and big peaks. This particular trip to Ecuador was with Jim Shimberg a well know rock and Ice climber from the Baker river valley who runs the Rock Barn in Plymouth. Andrew has said it is nice to go big out of the gate knowing he has a very experienced climbing partner at his side to look out for him. The two climbers spent 5 days in Ecuador total 2 of them used for the climb. Felegra said it was hard to acclimate in such short time as they camped just one night before they took the second day to Summit the peak. “It was towards the middle of the climb when I just had to remind my self to take at least 20 steps before stopping to rest” says the new climber as it was one of the hardest things he had done. Not long after the 20 step program short bursts of 5 steps in between rest brought the climbers to the summit. Once at the top Jim said to Andrew I kept on looking back and seeing you climbing so I knew I had to keep climbing.

Among all of the good feelings and emotion at the top of any big mountain there was still something that needed to be done. Not long ago a dear friend of the Felegra family John Shaw had passed away. It was here at the top of Cotopaxi that Andrew Honored his good friend’s life by spreading Johns remains at the top of one of the most beautiful Mountain Summits. It has been said that there is no grater honor than to be in the high places, close to sky looking down with a smile at the rest of the world. Andrew Continues to Train just back from his trip and already logging days in the Gunks, he says the next big trip is Denali in 2011. We will be looking forward to watching this new and dedicated alpinist as he continues to pursue his passion of the mountains. We are proud to have Andrew keeping close to the core with us here at Summers, Keep on climbing man your dreams are just one more step away!
